Final Decision Blog

Our final genre decision is an action film. An action film typically consists of an intense plot with the protagonist actively working towards a goal, usually enlisting the help of others. Fight scenes are also extremely common. Protagonists are often attacked when trying to reach their goals, during key points of the storyline. Another common theme of action films is the protagonist needing to step up to achieve their goals.
These common themes that run through the genre make it ideal for our pitch. In our pitch, our protagonist will be faced with a terrible situation. They will then have to step up in order to right the wrongs that have been made. We won’t be filming any fight scenes for this task, and our pitch may not include physical fights, but our protagonist is still fighting for something. Throughout this process, we did briefly consider a historical genre.
However, the mis-en-scene would have been less than optimal. We don’t have any access to historical clothing or historical methods of communication. While the longer shots would have been easier to film, the lack of proper costuming and props ruled it out. In regards to horror and drama, we came to a conclusion that it didn’t fit the idea we wanted, after some discussion. Horror would have been interesting to portray, but we did not want the movie focusing on the antagonist and their actions. Focusing on the antagonist and portraying them as scary while facing off against the protagonist wouldn’t have matched our ideas.
When this pitch was proposed, we all imagined the protagonist doing a lot and horror just didn’t match that. So now, with our genre comes the conventions we have to follow. Our camera shots need to revolve around quicker shots that show exciting or intense events occurring, along with close ups used sparingly and on important objects. Our sound should revolve around the diegetic sound of the scene as well as a tense or emotional soundtrack. Our editing will probably involve some reverse shots. Our mis-en-scene will probably just have to be realistic and reasonable, but nothing too specific is required.
